Life in Melbourne.
I am sharing some of my thoughts, rants or things that I find that is new to me. I am actually surprise to know that my lifestyle has changed 360 degrees. I came to Melbourne alone to start a new life, learn to be independent and to see what’s so good about living aboard. It is not fun at all.
I used to be able to sleep of 4 hours and still look fine but not anymore. I may look younger than my age is but my body is functioning like an old fart. I think the weather & the laid back-ness in Melbourne does play a big part of my drastic lifestyle change. My 8 hours sleep is very important to me now otherwise, I feel like sh!t the next morning.
Being in my late 20s, I am still getting pimples. -_- Argghhh!!! This is really ridiculous. I blame it on the bad weather in Melbourne that might also cause my hormones to go haywire.
My first job in Melbourne was working in a Chinese restaurant at Chinatown and got paid $50 per night that makes me realized money does not grow from trees. When I was offered my first full time job in a clothing company I knew I had to start saving money somewhere. So in order to save some money, I decided to bring left-overs from dinner to work for lunch because an average cost per lunch is about $7. I don’t think I will ever bring lunch to work if I was to work in Malaysia.
Something new to me – “food and wine” banquets where every dish are matched up with different wines. I found out about this when I was working in a Chinese restaurant. I didn’t know that Gelato/Gelatin was actually Italian ice cream and teh ais is actually thung lai cha (ice milk tea). I had my first Nando experience was in Melbourne. Damn sad rite…
Living expenses in Melbourne are quite high compare to other countries. Rent is calculated per calendar year.
Eg: if your rent is $200 per week, multiply with 52 weeks and divide it by 12 months which equals to what your rent is supposed to be.
Calculation: Rent $200 per week x 52 weeks = $10,400 / 12 months = $866.67 rent per month.
Makes a lot of difference even if it’s an extra $5 a week.
Transportation :
Parking is so expensive in the city. A half an hour parking could easily cost $3.50!!
Public transport – One thing good about the public transport system in Melbourne is, all train; tram and buses services are connected. A daily ticket cost about $5.80 (for zone 1) and a monthly ticket is about $90 (I think).
I guess you can actually live in this city without a car.
Clubbing scenes are way much better in Melbourne despise the cover charge that does not include complimentary drinks. Compared this to KL clubs/rave events where you pay a cover charge of RM30 – 50 + 1 drink FREE.
I haven’t actually work in Malaysia therefore I cannot compare the work life in Melbourne.
There are bound to have this 2 commonly asked question at work during Friday and Monday.
“What’s your plans for the weekend?” & “Did you have a good weekend?” Funny tho that these questions are asked by everyone in the office.
I started appreciating food after I met DJ (he loves cooking and he is 10x a better cook than me
). If it’s not for him I will still be paying $8.60 per plate for a Hainanese Chicken Rice and $2.00 for a freshly made roti canai in Melbourne but if I were to convert this money to RM I can have chicken rice and roti canai for the whole month! Damn I miss the hawker food in Malaysia.
Did an analysis on the cheapest food to eat in the city is Shanghainese cuisine (steam or fried dumpling 15 pcs for $6.50), Vietnamese pho (~ $6.50 perbowl) or HK style cafes. Cheap and nasty food but the serving portions are massive. I guess it all comes back to what you get for what you paid. Beer is cheaper than coke or bubble tea. How does that work?
Spring rolls are a popular entrée in all Asian restaurants. Which I find is peculiar because every second table in the restaurant will have an order of spring rolls as a starter. I don’t recall spring rolls is an essential starter when I dine in a Chinese restaurant back in Malaysia. Maybe spring rolls is categorized as Australia’s national entrée dish… ha-ha I’m just making it up.
Culture wise, definitely an eye opener to me. Almost everyday there are bound to be something new to me. I noticed that it is ok to kiss in public and walk bare foot during summer.
Giving a friend a hug – This is a very common culture procedure in a western county which I got adapted to it very quickly but when I give a hug to my friends (especially guys) in Malaysia they tends to be quite shy… *scratches head*.
Okay I think I have to stop here… the rain has stopped and I’m going out to get my snowboard waxed….
Ta ta and have a lovely weekend
